Outriders 2

Outriders 2 Was Real — And It’s Reportedly Dead

Key Takeaways:

  • The future of the Outriders franchise remains unclear after the studio’s announcement.
  • People Can Fly’s Project Gemini, reportedly Outriders 2, has been suspended due to publishing contract issues.
  • Project Bifrost, a live-service game, was also cancelled following internal criticism.

Insider Reveals Project Gemini Was Outriders 2

According to a report by The Thumb Wars, development of Outriders 2 has been cancelled by People Can Fly. The source, an unnamed insider, claims that the now-suspended Project Gemini was in fact the sequel to 2021’s Outriders. While this has not been officially confirmed by the studio or its former publishing partner Square Enix, the report aligns with recent corporate announcements.

On June 2, 2025, People Can Fly CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski released a statement confirming the suspension of both Project Gemini and another unannounced title, Project Bifrost. Wojciechowski cited a lack of communication from the publisher regarding new milestones and contract terms as the main reason for halting development on Gemini.

Breakdown in Publishing Terms Led to Suspension

“The suspension of the Gemini project is a consequence of the fact that the Publisher has not presented us with a draft of the subsequent content rider,” Wojciechowski explained. He also noted “the lack of communication from the Publisher as to its willingness to continue or terminate the Gemini project,” further signaling a fractured relationship between the two parties.

Square Enix, which published the original Outriders, has not released a statement regarding the alleged cancellation. It remains unclear whether Square Enix was the publisher involved in Project Gemini, though the connection is strongly implied.

Project Bifrost Also Shelved Due to Lack of Interest

While Project Gemini was potentially a high-profile sequel, Project Bifrost appears to have faced internal skepticism. According to the same source, Bifrost was a live-service title with no ties to existing franchises and failed to gain traction within the development team. It was reportedly dismissed as a “generic, trend-chasing product lacking in originality and creativity.”

Outriders’ Initial Success and Uncertain Future

The original Outriders, released in April 2021, attracted over 3.5 million players within its first month across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The cooperative looter-shooter was praised for its gameplay and combat systems but faced criticism for server issues and a lack of endgame content.

With the reported cancellation of Outriders 2, fans of the franchise may now face uncertainty regarding its future — unless People Can Fly finds a new publishing partner or revives the project independently.
