According to game director Brandon Adler, third-person gameplay wasn’t part of The Outer Worlds 2’s initial development plan. “We didn’t intend to do third-person when we first started the game,” Adler told Game Informer. “It wasn’t until about two years ago that we really began to explore the idea.”

The decision came after internal discussions about what players most wanted. “About halfway through, we were like, ‘I think people are really going to want this,’ so we did an evaluation of how difficult it was going to be to implement,” Adler said.

To make it happen, Obsidian partnered with Disruptive, a team specializing in camera systems, to integrate third-person functionality into The Outer Worlds 2’s existing mechanics. This collaboration allowed seamless transitions between first- and third-person views, along with reworked animations, field-of-view adjustments, and improved in-world interactions
