Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas didn’t mince words in a press conference following the announcement. Describing the league’s decision as “draconian” and “untenable,” Mas made it clear the club stood by its decision to rest Messi and Alba, citing a congested fixture schedule that included MLS matches, the Concacaf Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
“Messi is extremely upset,” Mas said. “They [Messi and Alba] don’t understand why skipping an exhibition match leads to a suspension. It’s not right.”

MLS Commissioner Regrets Decision but Stands by Rule
MLS Commissioner Don Garber admitted the decision to suspend Messi was “unfortunate” but necessary under the current rules. “We have a long-standing policy, and we had to enforce it,” Garber explained, while acknowledging Messi’s transformative impact on the league since joining Inter Miami.
Garber hinted that MLS would re-evaluate the rule going forward, noting, “I’m committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.”
