Marvel Rivals Season 3 Revealed: Phoenix, Blade, and Meta Overhaul Coming July 11

Key Takeaways:

  • Phoenix and Blade join the roster with powerful new abilities.
  • Team-Up system sees major changes with new additions and removals.
  • Buffs and nerfs aim to rebalance the dominant flyer and rushdown metas.

Two New Heroes: Phoenix and Blade Join the Battle

Marvel Rivals Season 3, titled The Abyss Awakens, officially drops on July 11, 2025, and NetEase Games has revealed a wave of content in a new trailer and Dev Vision. The standout additions are two new characters: Phoenix (Jean Grey) and Blade. Phoenix will launch in the first half of the season, while Blade arrives in the second.

Phoenix is a ranged duelist harnessing the devastating power of the Phoenix Force. According to Creative Director Guangyun Chen, her ultimate not only deals massive AoE damage but also clears enemy summons—a potentially meta-defining ability. She also introduces a new Team-Up with Wolverine called Primal Flame.

Team-Up Overhaul: What’s New and What’s Retired

Season 3 reshuffles the Team-Up system with two new combos:

  • Primal Flame (Phoenix & Wolverine): Adds burn and lifesteal to Wolverine’s leap.
  • Ever-Burning Bond (Human Torch & Spider-Man): Flaming web attacks with AoE damage and follow-up explosions.

Meanwhile, older Team-Ups like Storming Ignition and ESU Alumnus will be rotated out. Some existing Team-Ups are also evolving—Symbiote Shenanigans now includes Hela, and Stark Protocol adds Squirrel Girl with a homing squirrel bomb.

Buffs, Nerfs, and Meta Shake-Ups

A slew of balance changes aims to reset the meta. Flyers like Ultron and Iron-Man, dominant in Season 2 esports play, are receiving nerfs. Meanwhile, underperforming heroes like The Thing get major buffs—his new Battle Blitz ability could give him the tools to counter airborne threats.

Other notable adjustments:

  • Buffs: Venom, Namor, Scarlet Witch, Mantis, Invisible Woman
  • Nerfs: Emma Frost, Punisher, Mister Fantastic, Ultron, Loki
  • Guardian Revival Team-Up: Nerfed across the board

Lead Combat Designer Zhiyong promised a detailed balance patch ahead of launch.

Impact on Competitive Play

The upcoming changes are poised to reshape the competitive scene heading into Marvel Rivals Ignite’s Mid-Season Finals in August 2025. While Phoenix’s kit may shift team comps dramatically, the resilience of current metas—like the Jeff-Nado strategy—remains a hot topic.

With new characters, tactical Team-Ups, and balance shifts, Season 3 is set to redefine both casual matchmaking and high-stakes esports.
