The Future of Batman in the DCU: What We Know About The Brave and the Bold vs. The Batman Part 2

With the launch of James Gunn’s Superman to critical acclaim and record-breaking box office numbers, all eyes are now on the Caped Crusader. But the road to Batman’s DC Universe return is far from straightforward. Two major Bat-projects are in development—The Batman Part 2 and The Brave and the Bold—each occupying different corners of DC’s sprawling film universe.

The Brave and the Bold: Introducing the DCU’s Batman

First revealed in DC Studios’ 2023 slate announcement, The Brave and the Bold is James Gunn’s official introduction of Batman into the newly rebooted DCU. The film will adapt Grant Morrison’s comic run and center on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian Wayne, a trained assassin and the latest to take on the mantle of Robin.

“This is the story of the beginning of the Bat Family in the DCU,” said Gunn. While The Flash director Andy Muschietti remains attached to direct, the project is still in the scripting phase. Gunn confirmed a writer is actively developing the screenplay, though no casting news or production timelines have been revealed.

The Batman Part 2: The Pattinson Saga Continues

Meanwhile, Matt Reeves’ darker, noir-driven Bat-verse continues outside the DCU. The Batman Part 2, starring Robert Pattinson, has reportedly completed its script and is set to begin filming by the end of 2025. Its release date is locked in for October 1, 2027.

This version of Batman is entirely separate from the DCU and includes the HBO Max series The Penguin. Reeves’ trilogy, often referred to as the “Crime Saga,” will remain isolated from Gunn’s broader interconnected universe.

Two Batmen, One Studio

Despite fan hopes for crossover potential, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have made it clear: The Batman trilogy and related series are “under DC Studios,” but not part of the DCU. The upcoming Clayface origin story, however, will be fully DCU-canon.

So, while Superman has landed, it’ll be a few years before the DCU’s own Batman takes the spotlight. Until then, fans will have to enjoy a tale of two Batmen—one grounded in gritty realism, the other preparing to enter a shared cinematic universe filled with gods, monsters, and yes, flying jellyfish.
